Matheesha Pathirana has received his No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Sri Lanka to play in IPL 2026, giving Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) a crucial lift after a poor start.
The pacer will join the squad in Chennai ahead of their next fixture.
KKR have struggled this season, losing three matches and seeing one washed out. Their biggest weakness has been in the death overs, where opposition batters have dominated. Pathirana’s arrival comes at the right time, especially after injuries to other pacers left the attack unsettled. The franchise invested heavily in him, signing the Sri Lankan quick for ₹18 crore at the auction. His participation was uncertain after a left-leg injury during the T20 World Cup, but the clearance now strengthens KKR’s bowling unit.
Pathirana’s IPL record adds weight to expectations. With Chennai Super Kings, he claimed 47 wickets in 32 matches and played a decisive role in their 2023 title win. His ability to deliver under pressure makes him a key figure for KKR, who currently sit at the bottom of the table with just one point. Captain Ajinkya Rahane has faced criticism for frequent batting changes, while Cameron Green has yet to justify his price tag. Youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi has been a rare positive in an otherwise disappointing campaign.
KKR’s next clash against CSK in Chennai will test their resilience. Spin-friendly conditions may favour Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy, but Pathirana’s pace could be the difference. With their season at risk, his return offers hope of a turnaround in the Billie Jean King Cup-style fight for survival in IPL 2026.
