The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Odisha, warning of hot and humid conditions alongside the possibility of thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall in the coming days.
Hot and Humid Conditions in Coastal Districts
The alert covers key coastal and adjoining districts, including Khordha, Puri, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, and Ganjam. Residents in these areas are likely to experience discomfort due to high humidity levels, particularly during daytime hours.
Thunderstorms and Rainfall Forecast
According to IMD forecasts, isolated locations across multiple districts may witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph.
Affected districts include Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati. These regions may also receive light to moderate rainfall, while other parts of the state are expected to remain largely dry.
Short-Term Weather Outlook
For April 12–13, dry weather is likely to prevail across most parts of Odisha. However, hot and humid conditions are expected to persist, especially in coastal districts. Intermittent thunderstorm activity may return between April 13 and 15.
Heatwave Likely in Western Odisha
From mid-week onwards, weather conditions are expected to intensify, with heatwave-like conditions developing in parts of western Odisha. Districts such as Bargarh, Bolangir, and Sambalpur may experience rising temperatures.
Meanwhile, coastal regions are likely to continue facing high humidity levels, contributing to uncomfortable weather conditions under the ongoing yellow alert.
Advisory for Residents
The IMD has advised people to take precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours, and remaining alert during thunderstorms due to the risk of lightning and strong winds.
