IPL 2023 qualification scenarios: DC dent PBKS’ playoffs hopes

New Delhi: Liam Livingstone’s 94-run knock went in vain as Delhi Capitals edged out Punjab Kings by 15 runs in their IPL 2023 match in Dharamsala. Livingstone fought a lone battle before perishing on the final ball of the 214-run chase. Earlier, Rilee Rossouw slammed an unbeaten 82 as Delhi Capitals piled 213/2 against PBKS. After DC were invited to bat first, David Warner (46) and Prithvi Shaw (54) added 94 runs for the first wicket. Shaw and Rossouw added 54 to keep DC ticking, before the latter took the game to the PBKS bowlers. For PBKS, Sam Curran took two wickets. PBKS won the toss and opted to bowl.

The win against Mumbai in their final home fixture consolidated Lucknow’s position in the league table. If they win at Eden Gardens on Saturday, they are assured of a Play Off spot and possibly a top-two finish, should CSK lose to Delhi or win but end with an inferior NRR to Lucknow. If Lucknow loses to KKR, they will need at least two of CSK, MI and RCB to not cross 15 points to progress.

If CSK beat DC by 20 runs after scoring 170, LSG would need to win by around 40 runs to go past CSK on NRR and earn a top-two finish.

If CSK loses to DC by 30 runs after scoring 170, LSG should lose by 12 or fewer runs against KKR to end with a superior NRR to CSK to progress.

LSG play their last league match after CSK, so they will have the advantage of knowing the exact NRR equation.
