India will participate in a key international meeting convened by the United Kingdom to address the ongoing crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route facing disruptions amid rising tensions in West Asia.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that India’s Foreign Secretary will attend the discussions, highlighting the country’s proactive approach to safeguarding maritime security and energy supplies.

Global Concerns Over Maritime Security

The talks come as over 40 countries have been invited by the UK to discuss ways to ensure safe and uninterrupted movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which handles a significant share of the world’s oil and gas transit.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated:

“The UK side has invited several countries, including India, for talks on the Strait of Hormuz. From our side, the Foreign Secretary is attending the meeting.”

India’s Strategic Engagement in the Region

India has been actively engaging with regional stakeholders, including Iran, to maintain secure shipping routes for its vessels carrying essential energy supplies such as LPG and LNG.

According to the MEA, diplomatic efforts have already enabled multiple Indian ships to safely navigate the region despite ongoing tensions.

Focus on Energy Security and Safe Transit

The discussions are expected to centre on:

  • Ensuring uninterrupted maritime trade routes
  • Protecting energy supply chains
  • Strengthening international coordination in crisis response

India’s participation reflects its reliance on the Strait of Hormuz for energy imports and its commitment to global cooperation during geopolitical instability.

Broad International Participation

Countries expected to take part in the talks include major global economies such as France, Germany, Japan, Australia, and Canada, among others.

Notably, the United States is not expected to participate in this round of discussions.

Background: Rising Tensions in West Asia

The crisis in the Strait of Hormuz has intensified following escalating conflict in West Asia, disrupting shipping routes and raising concerns about global energy prices and supply chains.

The strategic waterway is vital for countries worldwide, making international cooperation essential to prevent further disruptions.
