The Chief Minister directed senior Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials to supervise on-ground enforcement and inspect building records to pinpoint when illegal floors were constructed and identify officials responsible for oversight lapses.

The collapse occurred on September 6, when a five-storey boys’ PG accommodation caved in. An investigation revealed that four of the building’s floors were constructed illegally without requisite municipal sanctions. Following the incident, the operator was arrested, and the MCD ordered the immediate demolition of an adjacent dilapidated PG structure declared unsafe.

The state government has initiated city-wide structural audits and safety inspections across primary student and residential clusters, including Mukherjee Nagar, Rajendra Nagar, Laxmi Nagar, Satya Niketan, and Saket. Authorities are checking mandatory permissions, structural integrity, and fire-safety compliance.

To address systemic gaps, the Delhi government is drafting the Paying Guest Accommodation Regulation and Safety Bill, 2026. The proposed legislation aims to establish mandatory licensing, zone-wise rent caps, routine safety audits, and a central portal listing verified PG accommodations across Delhi.
