India is keeping a close watch on the global Ebola outbreak situation after a traveller from Uganda was isolated in Bengaluru for observation, health ministry sources confirmed on Tuesday. Officials, however, clarified that no confirmed Ebola case has been reported in the country so far.
The traveller was admitted to the state-run Epidemic Diseases Hospital in Bengaluru after showing mild symptoms, including body ache, following arrival from Uganda. Authorities said the person remains stable and healthy while test results are awaited.
Bengaluru Ebola Scare Triggers Health Surveillance
According to officials from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, strict public health protocols are currently being followed in line with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.
A sample from the traveller has been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) for laboratory testing.
Health authorities said there is no reason for panic at this stage, as the suspected patient has only shown mild symptoms and is under observation.
The development comes as several African nations continue to report rising Ebola infections.
WHO Raises Concern Over Ebola Outbreak in Africa
The World Health Organization recently warned that the Ebola outbreak linked to the Bundibugyo strain in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) could be much larger than officially confirmed numbers.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that more than 100 confirmed Ebola cases and several deaths have already been recorded in Congo.
The organisation also said over 900 suspected cases and more than 200 suspected deaths are currently under investigation.
Neighbouring Uganda has also reported fresh infections, including cases among healthcare workers.
No Confirmed Ebola Case in India Yet
Indian health officials stressed that there is currently no confirmed Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) case in India.
Surveillance at airports and healthcare facilities has been intensified, especially for international travellers arriving from affected African regions.
The government said it is maintaining continuous monitoring of the situation and coordinating with global health agencies to ensure preparedness.
What Is Ebola Virus Disease?
Ebola Virus Disease is a severe and often fatal illness caused by the Ebola virus. It spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected people or contaminated surfaces.
Common Ebola symptoms include:
- Fever
- Body ache
- Weakness
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Internal or external bleeding in severe cases
Early detection, isolation and supportive treatment are considered critical in preventing the spread of the disease.
India Strengthens Preparedness Measures
Public health experts say India’s rapid response and surveillance systems have improved significantly after previous global health emergencies.
Authorities are expected to continue screening high-risk travellers and strengthening monitoring mechanisms across airports and hospitals in the coming weeks.
Officials have advised people not to spread misinformation online and to rely only on updates issued by government health agencies and the WHO.
