In a major anti-drug operation in Bhubaneswar, the Commissionerate Police injured an alleged drug mafia operative during an encounter near the Infovalley police station area on Wednesday morning.
The accused, identified as Papun Majhi, reportedly sustained bullet injuries to his right leg during an exchange of fire with police officials. Authorities said he is a known narcotics trafficker from the Jagannath Prasad region of Odisha’s Ganjam district.
According to police sources, the Special Crime Unit of the Commissionerate Police received specific intelligence about Papun Majhi’s movement near Arisol under Infovalley police limits. Officials suspected he had arrived in the area for illegal drug-related activities.
Acting on the information, a police team launched a targeted raid to apprehend the accused. Investigators claimed that Majhi attempted to flee after spotting the police team and allegedly opened fire while trying to escape.
Police personnel then retaliated in self-defence, resulting in a brief gunfight during which the accused suffered injuries.
After being taken into custody, Papun Majhi was initially admitted to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar for emergency treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital for advanced medical care.
Officials said his condition is currently under medical supervision.
Police have launched a detailed investigation into the accused’s alleged involvement in organised narcotics trafficking across Odisha.
