India has formally expressed interest in hosting the 2038 Asian Games, with Ahmedabad proposed as the central venue.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) submitted its proposal to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) during the Executive Board meeting in Sanya, China, on April 23.
The OCA confirmed that an evaluation team will visit India to assess infrastructure, preparedness, and feasibility. IOA CEO Raghuram Iyer said, “We are interested in bringing the Asian Games to India. We are in touch with the OCA and have written to them expressing our interest.”
India faces competition from South Korea and Mongolia, who have also expressed interest in hosting the Games. The 2026 edition will be held in Aichi-Nagoya, followed by Doha in 2030 and Riyadh in 2034.
India previously hosted the Asian Games in 1951 and 1982, both in New Delhi. The latest bid aligns with India’s broader strategy to secure major sporting events, including the 2036 Olympics and the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
Ahmedabad has emerged as the focal point of India’s sports infrastructure push, with significant investments in venues and urban development. Officials believe that reusing facilities and integrated planning will reduce costs and make the 2038 Games economically viable.
The bid underscores India’s ambition to strengthen its global sporting profile and expand its influence in international sports governance.
