Ahead of the Summit on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy underscored the significance of the G7 Summit, stating that it would be dedicated to Ukraine’s defence and economic resilience. He stressed Ukraine is looking forward to crucial decisions to be made.
Highlighting the importance of India’s engagement at the highest level, Zelenskyy sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to contribute to discussions aimed at promoting global peace and stability.
This meeting marked the second instance where PM Modi and Zelenskyy convened on the sidelines of a G7 summit, following their previous meeting in Hiroshima in May last year.
Prior to the meeting with the Ukrainian President, PM Modi held bilateral meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
The G7 countries are the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Britain. The leaders of G7 nations will also be joined by the chiefs of the European Council and the European Commission.
Notably, India is participating in the summit as an outreach country. PM Modi is attending the summit at the invitation of Italian PM Giorgia Meloni.
