A student died, and more than 120 others fell ill after suspected food poisoning at Kakabandh Ashram School in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.

The incident unfolded when children consumed pakhala with potato chutney.

Soon after the meal, several students reported vomiting, diarrhoea, and fever. Medical teams rushed them to Rasgovindpur Hospital, where over 120 remain under treatment. The residential school accommodates more than 220 children from Classes I to VIII, raising alarm as a large number fell ill within hours.

Authorities acted swiftly following the tragedy. The Additional District Magistrate suspended the headmaster of Kakabandh Ashram School. Officials also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 3 lakh for the family of the deceased student.

Parents and local residents expressed deep concern over food safety in residential schools. They demanded accountability and stronger monitoring of food preparation and hygiene practices. The district administration has initiated a formal inquiry into the incident.
