The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued comprehensive heatwave guidance as maximum temperatures surged across northwest, central, and peninsular India, with Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan recording 44.5°C.

IMD reported that temperatures in several regions remain 5°C above normal, creating heat stress conditions. The department forecasted heatwave development in isolated pockets of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and central India. Coastal and eastern states face hot and humid weather, while warm night conditions in the northern plains may worsen discomfort.

Officials said northwest India will see no significant change in maximum temperatures until April 27, followed by a gradual fall. Central and southern regions may witness a rise before a decline later in the forecast period.

IMD advised citizens to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and limit strenuous outdoor activity. Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with health conditions require special care.

The department emphasized that early awareness and preventive action reduce risks of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Its extended outlook indicates heatwave conditions will persist for seven days across northwest, central, and select southern regions, including Kerala and Mahe. Coastal states such as Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh will continue to experience hot and humid conditions.

IMD’s seasonal outlook for April to June 2026 projects above‑normal heatwave days across east, central, and northwest India, underscoring the need for preparedness. Detailed guidance, including do’s and don’ts, is available on IMD’s official website to support communities and administrations in managing extreme heat.
