Suchika Tariyal has scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a medal in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) at the Asian Games.
The 36‑year‑old from Rohtak defeated Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2‑0 in the women’s traditional ‑60kg quarterfinal, advancing to the semifinals and ensuring at least a bronze medal in MMA’s debut year at the Games.
Tariyal’s journey into combat sports began at age 12 after an eve‑teasing incident pushed her towards self‑defence. Over the years, she has excelled in judo, ju‑jitsu, kurash, and MMA, winning eight national judo titles, Commonwealth and South Asian Games golds, and the 2024 Ju‑Jitsu World Championship.
Her path to the Asian Games was not easy. Midway through qualification, eligibility rules changed, requiring a top‑six Asian ranking. Without immediate government support, Tariyal self‑financed trips to the Asian MMA Championships, winning two bronze medals to secure her place. These results eventually brought her into the Target Asian Games scheme and earned backing from the MMA‑SFI.
Beyond the medal, Tariyal sees her achievement as a platform to inspire young women to embrace combat sports for empowerment and self‑defence. With a strong social media presence and appearances on MTV Roadies and India’s Ultimate Warrior, she has become a visible advocate for women in sports.
As she prepares for her semifinal bout, Tariyal now eyes upgrading the colour of her historic medal.
