Hirakud Dam authorities in Sambalpur opened one sluice gate today as water inflow from upper catchment areas pushed the reservoir level close to its maximum capacity.
According to official figures, the current water level stands at 629 ft against the full storage capacity of 630 ft.
The single gate is being operated under controlled conditions to discharge excess water into the Mahanadi river basin and regulate reservoir storage.
Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to remain cautious and avoid the river. Dam authorities are monitoring inflow and outflow, with further gate openings depending on weather and water inflow.
