Hubert Hurkacz produced a masterclass of high-octane tennis at the Qi Zhong Tennis Centre on Friday, stunning former world No. 1 Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3 in the second round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
The victory marks a momentous career milestone for the 29-year-old Pole, ending an eight-match losing streak against the Serbian legend and registering his very first head-to-head win in nine meetings.
Returning to the site of his glorious 2023 title run for the first time, Hurkacz looked thoroughly at home on the fast Shanghai courts. Needing just 87 minutes to secure the upset, the World No. 8 relied on a devastating mix of booming serves and unyielding baseline authority that left Djokovic with few answers.
The pivotal moment of the opening set arrived early in the third game. Facing two break points, Hurkacz held his nerve, erased the danger with clinical serving, and seized the momentum. From that point onward, the Pole went toe-to-toe with one of the greatest returners in tennis history, out-muscling Djokovic from the back of the court and refusing to allow him into any rhythm.
“It’s going to be a fun challenge,” Hurkacz had said prophetically after his opening-round win over James Duckworth. “It’s on my list to play some good tennis against him and get a win… I need to serve well, play well from the baseline and return well.”
Hurkacz executed that game plan to perfection. His heavy delivery repeatedly earned him free points, while his deep, penetrating groundstrokes kept Djokovic pinned behind the baseline throughout the contest.
The triumph extends Hurkacz’s winning streak in Shanghai to eight matches, reaffirming his status as one of the tournament’s most formidable contenders. For Djokovic, coming off a title run in Beijing, the defeat marks a rare early exit at a venue where he has historically dominated.
With his long-awaited breakthrough against Djokovic now ticked off his bucket list, Hurkacz advances into the third round riding a massive wave of confidence.
