The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Odisha from Saturday, as a new low‑pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal around August 30.

Under the influence of the existing system, widespread rain continues across the state. The upcoming low‑pressure area is expected to intensify, bringing strong winds up to 50 kmph and raising the risk of flooding in several river basins.

On Friday, Mayurbhanj, Baleshwar, Kendujhar, Bhadrak and Jajpur districts have been placed under orange warning, while Puri, Khordha, Nayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kataka, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada and Sundaragada are under yellow alert for moderate rain and thunderstorms.

From August 29 onward, rainfall intensity will increase further. Anugola, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj will face heavy to very heavy showers with wind speeds of 40–50 kmph. Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Baleshwar, Debagada, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Sundaragada have been placed under yellow warning.

Rainfall will peak on Sunday, with Sundaragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj under orange alert and several other districts under yellow warning.

Between June 1 and August 26, Odisha recorded 1,100.2 mm of rainfall, which is 28 per cent above normal (856.7 mm). Four districts have received excess rainfall, 18 above normal, and eight normal.

Authorities have urged residents to stay alert, avoid waterlogged areas, and follow official advisories as the monsoon system strengthens over the weekend.
