Gamha Purnima at Puri Srimandir: World’s Largest Rakhis Grace Lord Jagannath and Balabhadra

The Jagannath Temple in Puri is set to witness a spectacular celebration of Gamha Purnima, as Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra adorn what are regarded as the world’s largest rakhis.

In a moving ritual of divine sibling affection, Devi Subhadra ties rakhis on her brothers’ arms, symbolising love and protection.

The Patara Bisoi servitors prepare four special rakhis for the occasion, with Lord Jagannath’s rakhi featuring vibrant red and yellow threads, while Lord Balabhadra’s rakhi shines in majestic blue and violet hues.

Gamha Purnima also marks the birth of Lord Balabhadra, revered as the patron of agriculture. Farming families across Odisha celebrate by honouring cattle, adorning ploughs, and offering treats to their livestock. The day further resonates with Odisha’s martial traditions, as the Paikas historically regarded it as auspicious for combat training.

At Srimandir, elaborate rituals unfold with all six idols — Jagannath, Balabhadra, Subhadra, Sudarshan, Bhudevi and Sridevi — bejewelled in gold ornaments. The Sudha Suar servitors, assisted by Puja Panda and others, conduct sacred ceremonies including clay idol immersion at Markandeya Pond, culminating in Lord Sudarshan’s return to the temple late at night.

This unique blend of devotion, agriculture, and martial heritage underscores the cultural depth of Odisha’s Gamha Purnima celebrations.
