The Twin City Commissionerate Police have arrested four individuals in Cuttack for allegedly black-marketing tickets for the upcoming India vs South Africa T20 match scheduled to be held on December 9 at Barabati Stadium. The arrests come amid growing complaints of inflated ticket prices and crowd mismanagement around the venue.
According to the police, the accused were found selling match tickets and passes at prices significantly higher than their printed value. In two separate operations, Bidanasi Police arrested two individuals, while Dargha Bazaar Police detained two others for similar offences.
Officials confirmed that 21 tickets and passes were seized during the crackdown. The accused were later forwarded to court for further legal action. Police stated that the individuals were attempting to resell the tickets and entry passes for the high-demand match at inflated rates, violating authorised pricing guidelines.
Widespread Complaints of Inflated Ticket Rates
This action follows multiple complaints raised on December 5 and 6, when allegations of large-scale black-marketing surfaced around Barabati Stadium. Viral videos on social media appeared to show Rs 700 tickets being sold for anywhere between Rs 3,500 and Rs 15,000.
The visuals, widely shared on platforms such as X, captured roadside negotiations and claims from spectators that official ticket stocks had run out shortly after counters opened.
Crowds reportedly gathered outside the stadium several hours before the 9 a.m. counter opening on December 5. Many spectators alleged that only a limited number of tickets were available at authorised windows, causing frustration and fueling the black-market demand.
According to information from the venue, around 2,000 tickets were sold online, while the remaining tickets were distributed through physical counters—resulting in heavy rush and increased unauthorised resale attempts.
Stadium Preparations Underway
Preparations for the India–South Africa T20 match are in full swing. Both teams are scheduled to hold their practice sessions today at the stadium, at different times.
Authorities have announced that the crackdown on illegal ticket sales will continue to ensure fair access for cricket fans and to maintain order around the venue ahead of the high-profile match.
