Police arrested Sunil Ganjhu, a former zonal commander of CPI (Maoist), from Barkagaon block in Hazaribag district.

Ganjhu, 40, hails from Pathalgada in Chatra district. He faced charges in 40 criminal cases across Hazaribag, Chatra, Bokaro, and Giridih. These included murder, extortion, attacks on police, and violations of the Arms Act.

A special team led by Sadar SDPO Amit Anand tracked Ganjhu to Jorakat village. Officers surrounded the area and moved in swiftly. Ganjhu did not resist arrest.

During interrogation, Ganjhu admitted to extorting coal mining companies, contractors, and local businessmen for years. He operated mainly in the Hazaribag-Chatra region, demanding protection money and threatening violence.

Hazaribag SP Anjani Anjan confirmed the arrest and called it a major setback for the Maoist network. He stated that operations against Naxal activities will continue with full force.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently declared that India will be free of Naxalism by 2026. Ganjhu’s arrest adds momentum to that goal.

Security forces have intensified surveillance in rural zones. Intelligence units now monitor suspected Maoist hideouts and financial trails. Authorities aim to dismantle remaining networks and prevent regrouping.

Local residents expressed relief after the arrest. Many feared retaliation or forced recruitment by Maoist cadres. Police assured continued protection and urged cooperation from villagers.

Ganjhu will face trial in multiple courts. Investigators are gathering evidence to link him to past crimes and trace his associates.
