The Election Commission of India (ECI) has permitted voters whose names appear on the electoral roll to use any one of 12 alternative photo identity documents if they cannot produce their Electors’ Photo Identity Card (EPIC).
This move aims to ensure smooth voting and prevent impersonation.
Nearly all voters in Bihar and the eight Assembly constituencies facing bye-elections have received EPICs. The Commission directed Chief Electoral Officers to deliver EPICs to new voters within 15 days of finalizing the electoral rolls.
The 12 accepted photo IDs include Aadhaar Card, MNREGA Job Card, Bank/Post Office Passbook with photo, Health Insurance Smart Card, Driving License, PAN Card, NPR Smart Card, Indian Passport, Pension document with photo, Service Identity Cards from government or public sector employers, Official IDs for MPs/MLAs/MLCs, and the Unique Disability ID (UDID) Card.
Voters must ensure their name is listed on the Electoral Roll to be eligible to vote. For women observing purdah, polling stations will provide privacy and female staff for dignified identification.
This inclusive approach reflects ECI’s commitment to accessible and secure elections. By allowing multiple forms of identification, the Commission reduces barriers and encourages broader participation.
