Tension erupted at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Saturday after a doctor was assaulted following the death of a patient.

Police detained several individuals and launched an investigation into the incident.

The violence broke out in the medicine ward after the death of Shibashankar Behera, a resident of Ogalapada in Khordha district. Behera had been admitted three days earlier in critical condition after allegedly consuming poison. He died during treatment on Saturday morning.

Soon after his death, family members and local villagers accused hospital staff of medical negligence. The situation turned chaotic when an angry group confronted the medical team and allegedly attacked a doctor on duty. Hospital staff alerted the police as panic spread across the premises.

Khandagiri Police personnel arrived promptly and brought the situation under control. Officers detained several people involved in the assault and recorded statements from witnesses. The police confirmed that legal action will be taken against those responsible for the violence.

Hospital authorities assured that security measures would be strengthened to prevent similar incidents. The assault has sparked concern among medical professionals, who demanded strict enforcement of safety protocols for healthcare workers.
