The IPL 2025 season, already marred by off-field geopolitical tensions, witnessed a dramatic on-field confrontation today during a high-stakes match between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium.

A heated argument between LSG’s young debutant Digvesh Rathi and SRH’s explosive batsman Abhishek Sharma stole the spotlight, leaving fans and analysts buzzing about the intensity of the encounter.

The incident unfolded in the 12th over of SRH’s innings, shortly after Rathi dismissed the SRH batsman with his trademark fiery bowling. Known for his controversial ‘notebook celebration’—where he mimes writing a batsman’s name in a notebook after taking a wicket—Rathi has already been a polarising figure in the IPL 2025 season. However, this time, his animated gestures appeared to irk Abhishek Sharma, who was at the non-striker’s end. Visuals showed Rathi raising three fingers, possibly taunting Sharma, who responded with a sharp verbal retort.

The situation quickly escalated as both players exchanged heated words, prompting the on-field umpires to intervene. Players from both teams, including LSG’s captain and SRH’s support staff, rushed to separate the two. The tension was palpable, with Rathi visibly agitated and Sharma refusing to back down. The crowd at Ekana Stadium roared, some cheering the drama while others expressed concern over the growing aggression in the IPL.

Digvesh Rathi, a 25-year-old debutant for LSG, has already made headlines this season for his on-field antics. According to reports, Rathi has been fined multiple times for his ‘notebook celebration,’ accumulating demerit points and facing penalties of up to 50% of his match fees for repeated offences. His earlier celebrations, including one after dismissing Mumbai Indians’ Naman Dhir and another against Kolkata Knight Riders’ Sunil Narine, had already put him under the scanner of the IPL disciplinary committee. Today’s incident might lead to further scrutiny, especially given the involvement of a high-profile player like Abhishek Sharma.

Sharma, a key player for SRH since 2019, is no stranger to the IPL’s pressure cooker environment. The 24-year-old all-rounder holds the record for the joint-fastest fifty by an SRH batter, scoring 50 off just 16 balls, a feat that has cemented his reputation as a clean striker and a clutch performer. However, today’s altercation showcased a different side of Sharma, one fueled by competitive fire.

On-field disputes in cricket are not uncommon, especially in a high-stakes tournament like the IPL.

Fans took to social media to express their reactions, with #RathiVsSharma trending on X within minutes of the incident. “Rathi needs to tone it down. His celebrations are fun, but this aggression is too much,” wrote one user. Another commented, “Abhishek Sharma standing his ground! Love the fire, but let’s keep it sporting.”

The IPL governing body has yet to release an official statement, but sources indicate that both players could face fines or demerit points for breaching the code of conduct.

As the IPL 2025 season progresses, the spotlight will undoubtedly remain on Rathi and Sharma. Will this altercation fuel their performances, or will it lead to further disciplinary action? For now, the cricketing world waits with bated breath as the drama of the IPL continues to unfold.
