Delhi Traffic At A Standstill: Festive Rush, Vehicle Breakdowns, and BS-VI Border Curbs Cause Severe Peak-Hour Gridlock

Severe traffic congestion brought major corridors across central, south, and north Delhi to a near standstill on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, leaving commuters stranded for hours during peak movement.

The Delhi Traffic Police attributed the widespread gridlock to a combination of heavy festive season shopping crowds, key vehicle breakdowns, and ongoing winter pollution border enforcement.

Major Bottlenecks and Stranded Corridors

Commuters reported their travel times doubling or tripling across several primary arterial arteries:

  • Ring Road & Barapullah Transit: Heavy crawling was reported on the Ring Road stretch between Bhikaji Cama Place and the Indraprastha (IP) flyover. Gridlocks intensified around Sarai Kale Khan and the Barapullah elevated corridor near JLN Stadium, a recurring hotspot following the recent opening of Barapullah Phase-3.
  • Interstate Arteries: Key connecting routes faced heavy slowdowns, including the Delhi-Noida-Direct (DND) flyway, Vikas Marg through Laxmi Nagar, the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (NH-9), and Outer Ring Road stretches between Vasant Vihar and Sukhdev Vihar.
  • NH-48 & Border Points: Motorists traveling along National Highway-48 between Gurugram and Dhaula Kuan faced bumper-to-bumper traffic near Mahipalpur and Sarhol border points, exacerbated by strict vehicular checks.

Emergency Vehicles Stuck, Public Outcry on Social Media

Frustrated commuters took to social media to highlight severe delays, noting the absence of traffic personnel on several jammed stretches:

“Severe traffic congestion on Barapullah Road near JLN Stadium. Stranded for hours with virtually no vehicular movement… Three ambulances are also stuck,” posted a commuter on X around 6 PM.

The Delhi Traffic Police responded online, clarifying that a car breakdown on the Barapullah corridor created a bottleneck that cascaded into surrounding stretches, while towing operations worked to restore normal flow.

Compounding Factors: Market Footfall & BS-VI Curbs

A senior traffic police official confirmed that increased footfall around major retail hubs in South and Central Delhi, coupled with unauthorized street parking, significantly increased traffic volume.

The congestion was further amplified by ongoing winter anti-pollution measures. The Delhi government’s strict border enforcement banning non-BS-VI compliant diesel and petrol vehicles from entering the capital has led to extensive vehicular queuing at the Delhi-Haryana border points.
