The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) announced a major expansion of its operations in Odisha and committed to deploying assets across all key ports.
Inspector General Iqbal Singh Chauhan confirmed that Coast Guard ships will soon operate from Gopalpur Port, while the number of vessels at Paradip Port will increase significantly.
Furthermore, authorities revealed plans to establish jetty facilities and Coast Guard branches at Gopalpur and Dhamra ports. In addition, the ICG will set up a dedicated drone unit at Dhamra to strengthen surveillance and coastal security. These measures form part of a broader proposal submitted to the Chief Minister of Odisha, emphasising the importance of maritime safety and anti‑smuggling operations.
Recently, Coast Guard drills off Paradip highlighted the urgency of reinforcing coastal defences. Moreover, the exercises focused on search and rescue operations, preventing infiltration, and intercepting smuggling networks, with state agencies actively coordinating alongside Coast Guard teams.
Meanwhile, Odisha’s government signed agreements for Gopalpur Port expansion and a new jetty near Paradip, reflecting a parallel push to boost maritime infrastructure. Consequently, these initiatives underscore a coordinated effort between the state and Coast Guard to secure Odisha’s coastline and ports.
