Andrey Rublev delivered a surprise in the Canadian Open quarter-finals, defeating a struggling Jannik Sinner in three sets.
The world number one withdrew from the Olympics due to illness and seemed to be hampered by a recurring hip injury as he lost 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 in Montreal on Saturday.
In a match disrupted by rain, Rublev won the first set before Sinner came back to push for a final set, but he failed to maintain his form as the Russian ended his eight-match winning streak on hard courts.
Rublev is set to face Matteo Arnaldi next, who concluded Saturday’s action with a 6-4, 7-5 quarter-final victory over Kei Nishikori, who is making a comeback.
Rublev, since the beginning of the 2020 season, has become one of only four players to beat the ATP’s top-ranked player on multiple surfaces, joining Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, and Holger Rune.
Aryna Sabalenka’s Canadian Open aspirations ended as Amanda Anisimova upset the tournament’s favourite in Toronto, advancing to her first WTA 1000 semi-final.
The 22-year-old American, who paused her tennis career in 2023 to focus on her mental health, achieved a 6-4, 6-2 win, marking her fifth victory over Sabalenka in seven encounters.
Anisimova will face Emma Navarro, who secured her spot after defeating lucky-loser Taylor Townsend 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in an all-American quarter-final.
With this victory, Navarro, aged 23, has reached her first WTA 1000 semi-final.
