Bhubaneswar: BJP MLA Mohan Majhi on Tuesday demanded a judicial inquiry into the death of 13 infants within a span of 18 days at Keonjhar district headquarters hospital.
Majhi, who is also the chief whip of the Opposition party in Odisha Assembly, demanded a sitting judge of Orissa High Court to conduct the inquiry. He said only a judicial inquiry can unravel the real reason of the death of infants.
The BJP leader held medical superintendent responsible for such unfortunate incident.
A two-member team headed by additional director (child health) Rasmi Ranjan Satpathy on Monday visted the hospital and enquired the matter. The team discussed the incident with doctors and other supporting staff.
A total of 13 children admitted to the district headquarters hospital died in the month including four deaths in the last two days, informed ADMO Kishore Prusty on Sunday.
Among the recent deaths, one child died on Saturday while three others were reported dead on Sunday. Out of a total of 122 children admitted to the hospital this month, 13 have died till September 18.
Following the deaths, tension erupted on the premises of the hospital as the families alleged medical negligence. A police team led by the local SDPO reached the hospital and tried to control the situation.
