After 16 action-packed days of elite sporting brilliance, the 20th Asian Games came to a grand and emotional conclusion at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.
The glittering closing ceremony brought together thousands of athletes, dignitaries, and sports enthusiasts to celebrate the unity, athletic feats, and memorable triumphs forged across Aichi-Nagoya.
The event culminated with Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani officially declaring the Games closed. In a symbolic gesture bridging host nations, the ceremonial Asian Games torch and OCA flag were formally handed over to Qatari representatives, signalling the start of the countdown to the 2030 Asian Games in Doha.
A Celebration of Culture and “One Asia”
The closing ceremony seamlessly blended traditional Japanese hospitality with state-of-the-art visual spectacles. Highlighting the unifying theme of “One Asia,” laser-lit performances, parkour routines, and dynamic choreography set the stage as athletes from all participating nations marched into the arena together.
Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, and distinguished global leaders joined Sheikh Joaan in reflecting on the remarkable achievements of the continent’s finest competitors. During his closing address, the OCA President praised the spirit of sportsmanship:
“We have witnessed remarkable comebacks and dramatic misses. We have celebrated the rise of new champions and seen seasoned campaigners win medals once again. Together, we have seen how far Asia can rise when we dream without limits.”
Neeru Dhanda Leads India’s Contingent
Triple-medal-winning shooter Neeru Dhanda proudly carried the Indian Tricolour into the stadium as the nation’s flag-bearer. Dhanda delivered a standout performance during the shooting events, clinching two gold medals—including a historic triumph in the individual women’s trap—and one silver medal.
India ended its 2026 Asian Games campaign in fourth place on the overall medal tally with 85 medals (21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze). Highlighted by gold-medal victories in men’s hockey and cricket alongside strong performances in athletics and archery, the Indian contingent capped off their campaign on a triumphant note.
Looking Ahead to Doha 2030
As the Asian Games cauldron flame was slowly extinguished, Qatar took centre stage for the official handover segment. Following the playing of Qatar’s national anthem, a promotional showcase provided global audiences with a first glimpse into what awaits in Doha for the 21st Asian Games in 2030.
China topped the overall standings for the 12th consecutive edition with 341 total medals, followed by host nation Japan and South Korea. With the curtain now drawn on Aichi-Nagoya, the continent turns its eyes toward Qatar for the next chapter of Asia’s greatest sporting event.
