The State Transport Authority (STA), Odisha, has launched the Intelligent Enforcement Management System (IEMS) across selected National and State Highways.

The AI-powered traffic surveillance system, operational from August 1, is designed to ensure stricter enforcement of traffic rules through automated detection and e-challan generation.

In the first phase, IEMS has been introduced on four major highways, including the Raurkela–Sambalpur State Highway No. 10. Equipped with AI-enabled cameras, the system will automatically detect and record violations such as over-speeding, triple riding on two-wheelers, wrong-side driving, and riding without helmets.

Once a violation is captured, the system generates evidence and issues an e-challan without manual intervention. The STA has also notified speed limits:

  • Four-lane highways: 60 kmph for two-wheelers, 100 kmph for light motor vehicles, 80 kmph for heavy vehicles.
  • Two-lane highways: 50 kmph for two-wheelers, 60 kmph for light motor vehicles and four-wheelers.

Officials said the initiative is expected to improve compliance, reduce accidents, and promote safer driving practices across Odisha’s highways.
