Toxic Movie Review: Yash’s Action Drama Fails to Deliver a Compelling Story!

Yash’s much-awaited action drama Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups has opened to mixed-to-negative critical response, with the film facing criticism for its lengthy runtime, excessive violence and lack of a compelling narrative.

Directed by Geetu Mohandas, the film stars Yash in dual roles alongside Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth. The movie was promoted as a dark “fairy tale for grown-ups”, combining crime, action, family relationships and romance.

What is Toxic about?

Set against the backdrop of Goa under Portuguese rule, Toxic follows Raya, played by Yash, and his sister Ganga, portrayed by Nayanthara, as they attempt to establish control over the region’s illegal businesses.

Raya is set to marry Rebecca, the daughter of crime lord Salvador. However, his life takes a different turn after Nadia, played by Kiara Advani, enters the picture.

The story subsequently explores Raya’s relationships, ambitions and troubled past while introducing several characters and subplots.

Toxic movie review: What works and what doesn’t

One of the major criticisms of Toxic is its storytelling. Despite its ambitious premise and visually elaborate presentation, the narrative has been described as difficult to follow, with numerous characters appearing throughout its more than three-hour runtime.

The film reportedly relies heavily on action and violence, with guns, knives, axes and explosions dominating several sequences. While the action is designed to establish Raya as a powerful and intimidating character, the repeated violence can make the narrative feel repetitive.

The film also attempts to explore themes of trauma, family and the consequences of a violent life. However, these emotional elements reportedly struggle to make a lasting impact because of the way the characters and their journeys are presented.

Yash’s performance

Yash carries much of the film, appearing in dual roles as Raya and his estranged son Ticket. His screen presence remains one of the film’s major attractions, particularly during the action-heavy sequences.

However, the characterisation of Raya has also drawn criticism. The protagonist’s violent behaviour and problematic attitude make it difficult for the audience to emotionally connect with him, according to the review.

Nayanthara and Kiara Advani’s characters provide some of the film’s emotional grounding, but their roles reportedly do not receive enough space to develop fully.

A visually ambitious but uneven film

Toxic attempts to combine crime, action, family drama and darker themes into one large-scale cinematic experience. Its visual presentation and elaborate action sequences contribute to its scale.

However, the film’s lengthy runtime and crowded narrative appear to work against it. Several characters and story developments are introduced without enough time to establish meaningful emotional connections.

The film also appears to struggle with balancing its attempt to critique violent and problematic behaviour with its repeated presentation of such behaviour as spectacle.

Verdict

Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups arrives with considerable expectations following Yash’s success in the KGF franchise. However, the critical response suggests that its ambitious presentation does not fully compensate for weaknesses in storytelling and character development.

Whether audiences agree with the criticism or embrace the film for its action, scale and Yash’s star power will become clearer as more viewers share their reactions.

For now, Toxic appears to be a film that makes a strong visual impression but struggles to turn its ambitious ideas into an engaging and emotionally satisfying story.
