Former Lanjigarh MLA Sibaji Majhi died late Tuesday night at his native village Danarguda in Bijepur. He was 68.
Majhi had been undergoing treatment for chest pain and was recently discharged from a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
Majhi first entered politics as the inaugural representative of the newly formed Lanjigarh Assembly constituency in 2009. He served until 2014, focusing on the development of tribal‑dominated and remote areas of Lanjigada and Thuamul Rampur. His leadership extended further when he became the first chairman of the Special Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Council in Kalahandi district. He championed initiatives aimed at uplifting tribal and Dalit communities, leaving a lasting impact on the region.
His sudden demise has cast a pall of gloom across Kalahandi. Political leaders, social workers, and residents expressed grief, remembering him as a dedicated leader who worked tirelessly for marginalised communities. Majhi’s contributions to tribal development and his role in shaping Lanjigada’s political identity remain etched in local memory.
