Vehicle owners in Odisha could face strict action for driving without valid insurance as the state Transport Department intensifies its enforcement drive. Authorities may seize uninsured vehicles and initiate proceedings to cancel their registration certificates (RCs) in cases of serious or repeated violations.

The Transport Department is set to strengthen checks at toll gates using the e-Detection system, an automated mechanism that electronically verifies mandatory vehicle documents.

Insurance, fitness and PUC documents to be checked

Under the system, vehicles passing through toll gates will be checked electronically for essential documents, including:

  • Valid motor insurance
  • Fitness certificate
  • Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate

If a vehicle is found to be operating without the required documents, an e-challan may be issued immediately.

Authorities have also warned that habitual offenders could face further legal action for repeatedly violating vehicle and traffic regulations.

RC cancellation, vehicle seizure possible

In serious cases or where violations are repeated, the Transport Department can initiate proceedings to cancel the vehicle’s registration. Officials may also seize vehicles found to be operating in violation of mandatory requirements.

The crackdown is aimed at improving compliance with vehicle documentation requirements and strengthening road safety across Odisha.

The use of automated verification is expected to help authorities identify vehicles that do not have valid insurance or other mandatory certificates without relying solely on manual inspections.

Over 65 lakh vehicles reportedly without valid insurance

According to information cited by the department, 65,73,633 vehicles in Odisha have reportedly been found without valid insurance.

The figure has prompted authorities to intensify enforcement and urge vehicle owners to ensure that their insurance and other mandatory documents remain valid.

What vehicle owners should do

Vehicle owners in Odisha should check the validity of their:

  1. Motor insurance
  2. PUC certificate
  3. Fitness certificate, where applicable
  4. Registration and other mandatory vehicle documents

Keeping these documents valid can help owners avoid e-challans and further enforcement action.
