Senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and former Odisha cabinet minister Susanta Singh passed away on Monday morning at the age of 53.
According to party sources and medical officials, Singh was undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar when his condition deteriorated. His passing has sent shockwaves across the political spectrum in Odisha, with leaders from various political parties expressing deep condolences.
A Dedicated Career in Public Service
Susanta Singh was a prominent political figure in Western Odisha. He represented the Bhatli Assembly constituency in Bargarh district for three consecutive terms, winning the state legislative assembly elections in 2009, 2014, and 2019.
During his tenure in government, Singh held key cabinet portfolios in the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik-led administration, serving notably as the Minister for Labour & Employees’ State Insurance and Minister for Rural Development.
In the 2024 Odisha Legislative Assembly elections, Singh contested from his home constituency of Bhatli but was defeated by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Irasis Acharya. Despite the election outcome, he remained an influential leader within the Biju Janata Dal.

Political leaders, colleagues, and supporters from across the state have expressed immense grief over his early demise. Family sources confirmed that his final rites will be performed at his birthplace in Bhatli.
