In a major victory against the drug mafia, the Odisha Police have destroyed a staggering 108.90 metric tonnes (1,08,904.9 kg) of seized ganja under the state’s flagship “Nishamukta Odisha Abhiyan” (Drug-Free Odisha Campaign).

The massive destruction was carried out between June 2 and July 10, 2026 as part of the National Pre-Trial Narcotic Substances Destruction Special Drive. The seized ganja, with an estimated street value of ₹544.5 crore, was destroyed under the direct supervision of Director General of Police Yogesh Bahadur Khurania.

In addition to the record ganja haul, police also destroyed:

  • 12.4 kg of brown sugar worth ₹24.8 crore
  • 3,631 bottles of cough syrup

Boudh Police emerged as the top performer, destroying the highest quantity of 37,484.885 kg of ganja. They were closely followed by Kandhamal Police (34,245.430 kg), Malkangiri (8,969.940 kg), Gajapati (6,671 kg), Koraput (6,155.773 kg), and Rayagada (5,796.70 kg).

A total of 24 police districts and units, including the Special Task Force (STF) of CID Crime Branch, SRP units, and district police forces, participated in the coordinated drive. Their combined effort helped Odisha Police far exceed the original target set under the campaign.

The drive received strong public support. On July 1, 2026, more than 25,000 citizens across the state took a solemn anti-narcotics oath, pledging to stay away from drugs and actively support the fight against drug abuse and illegal trafficking.

Speaking on the achievement, DGP Y.B. Khurania said:

“Our campaign against illegal drug trade, smuggling, and the drug mafia will become even more widespread and stringent in the coming days. Odisha Police will maintain a policy of ‘zero tolerance’ against lawbreakers. With coordinated action, use of modern technology, active public cooperation, and strong resolve, we are committed to building a drug-free, safe, and empowered Odisha.”

This large-scale destruction of long-pending NDPS cases marks a significant step forward in Odisha’s fight against narcotics and reinforces the state’s commitment to creating a Nishamukta Odisha.
