Majhi on Pravat Biswal BJP Joining

In a significant boost to the ruling BJP in Odisha, former MLA Pravat Ranjan Biswal formally joined the party on Sunday, dealing another blow to the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), which is witnessing a steady stream of desertions.

Biswal, accompanied by a large number of supporters in a grand procession, was welcomed into the BJP fold at the party’s state headquarters. He was joined by six corporators from Cuttack Municipal Corporation and Jagdish Prasad Sahu, President of Joda Municipality.

The joining ceremony was graced by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and BJP State President Manmohan Samal, who handed over the party membership to the veteran leader.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi launched a sharp attack on the BJD, saying the party is desperately trying to stop its leaders from leaving. “For the last six days, BJD leaders have been camping in Kataka to prevent anyone from joining us,” Majhi said. “No matter how many dams they build, water always finds its way. People have stopped wanting BJD. They are coming to a government that keeps its promises.”

Majhi further claimed that a long list of BJD leaders is ready to join the BJP, and more high-profile entrants are expected once the state president finalises the dates. He exuded confidence that BJP will remain in power in Odisha for the next 25 years while working towards a “Vikshit Odisha, Vikshit Bharat.”

State BJP President Manmohan Samal described Biswal as a valuable asset, noting his long political career and tireless work.

“Inspired by Modi’s popularity”

Speaking after joining, Pravat Biswal credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s massive popularity for his decision. “Everyone’s lips are chanting Narendra Modi these days. The election results in West Bengal and Odisha are proof of that,” he said. He thanked CM Mohan Majhi, Manmohan Samal, and Cuttack leaders for the warm welcome.

Biswal, who had served the BJD loyally for 24 years, revealed his growing disillusionment. “I worked with full dedication… but the party failed to recognise the honest. That’s why I have come here. Now I will work together with everyone for the people,” he added.

Background

Biswal was expelled from the BJD in February this year on charges of indiscipline and anti-party activities after he publicly opposed the party’s decision to field Dr. Santrupt Mishra for the Rajya Sabha. He had won the Cuttack-Choudwar assembly seat on a BJD ticket in 2009 and 2014. His son later won the same seat in 2019 and 2024.

With this high-profile induction, the BJP appears to be consolidating its position in Cuttack and surrounding areas, signalling a major realignment in Odisha’s political landscape ahead of future battles.
