The water level of the Mahanadi River has increased in Odisha’s Sonepur district after the Hirakud Dam released the season’s first floodwater through 10 sluice gates. Officials have confirmed there is no flood threat at present but are closely monitoring the situation.

The Mahanadi River witnessed a rise in water level in Odisha’s Sonepur district on Friday after the Hirakud Dam released the season’s first floodwater through 10 sluice gates.

According to officials, floodwater from the first four sluice gates reached Sonepur at around 6:30 am, nearly 18 hours after its release from the reservoir. Water discharged through the remaining six gates was expected to reach the district later in the morning.

Water level rises, but no flood situation

The inflow from the Hirakud reservoir has led to a noticeable increase in the Mahanadi’s water level in Sonepur. However, district authorities have clarified that there is currently no flood situation, and the river remains within safe limits.

Officials are continuously monitoring water levels and assessing conditions downstream to ensure timely action if required.

Fishermen take precautionary measures

As a precaution, local fishermen have secured their boats and fishing nets to prevent them from being swept away by the stronger river currents.

People living along the riverbanks have also been advised to remain alert and follow safety instructions issued by the local administration as additional water continues to flow downstream.

Authorities maintain close watch

The release of floodwater from the Hirakud Dam is a routine reservoir management measure during the monsoon season to regulate rising water levels.

Authorities have assured residents that the situation remains under control. Continuous monitoring is underway, and necessary precautions are being taken to ensure public safety as more discharged water moves through the Mahanadi river system.
