A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Nabarangpur district’s Umerkote block, where a family carried the body of a minor girl on a motorcycle after being denied burial space and unable to afford funeral expenses.
The girl, Indrani Kumar of Amaguda village, had been staying with relatives in Sanbharandi for treatment. She died there while under care. When her family sought to perform the last rites at the local cremation ground, villagers allegedly refused permission and demanded ₹7,000 for burial. Unable to pay, the impoverished family decided to take the body back to their village.
Without funds to hire a hearse, relatives placed the body on a motorcycle and transported it to Amaguda. The distressing sight left onlookers shocked and raised serious questions about dignity in death and the lack of basic funeral services in rural areas.
Local residents have urged the administration to investigate the incident, take action against those responsible, and ensure that such inhuman situations never recur. The case highlights the intersection of poverty, social neglect, and the absence of accessible funeral infrastructure in remote villages.
Officials are expected to verify the facts and initiate measures to prevent similar tragedies.
