ISKCON Ratha Yatra controversy

ISKCON rejected Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb’s appeal on Ratha Yatra dates, declaring the discussion closed and refusing alignment with traditional Odia customs.

On July 7, 2026, ISKCON Chairman Madhusevita Dasa sent a firm reply to the Gajapati Maharaj. He categorically dismissed the request and ended the exchange with a final statement: “There is no more to add, and therefore we respectfully bow out of this discussion once and for all.”

This decision underscores ISKCON’s determination to continue organising Ratha Yatra abroad on unconventional dates. The organisation’s refusal to reconsider has ignited strong reactions among Jagannatha devotees, who view the festival’s timing as sacred and non-negotiable.

The Gajapati Maharaja, regarded as the custodian of Jagannatha traditions, had urged ISKCON to respect the Odia calendar. His appeal carried the weight of centuries-old customs tied to the temple rituals of Puri. ISKCON’s rejection now signals a widening divide between the international body and traditional followers.

Devotees argue that altering the festival’s schedule undermines its sanctity. They believe the Ratha Yatra must follow the prescribed tithi, which is inseparable from Jagannatha culture. ISKCON’s rigid stance has left many feeling that their sentiments were disregarded.

By formally closing the dialogue, ISKCON has drawn a line that may intensify cultural and religious tensions. The move highlights a clash between global convenience and traditional authenticity. For millions of devotees, the timing of the Ratha Yatra remains a matter of faith, not flexibility.
