Odisha fire services remain on high alert as low-pressure conditions trigger widespread heavy rainfall across the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of very heavy to extremely heavy rains in several districts. Fire Services Director General Sudhanshu Sarangi directed all fire stations to stay in 24×7 readiness. Officials deployed special rescue teams in Cuttack (Central Range), Berhampur (Southern Range), and Sambalpur (Northern Range). These teams coordinate with local administration to respond quickly during emergencies.
The department positioned 324 motorised inflatable rubber boats statewide — 159 in the central range, 84 in the southern range, and 81 in the northern range. Teams also prepared 3,143 life jackets and 2,712 lifebuoys for water rescue operations. Additionally, they readied 145 underwater breathing sets and 161 surface breathing sets for deep-water missions.
Fire services arranged 952 pumps to drain water from flooded roads and low-lying areas. This includes 51 high-capacity pumps, 477 trailer pumps, 409 portable pumps, and 15 floating pumps. They also stocked 628 tower lights and 173 searchlights for night operations.
To handle fallen trees and structural damage, the department keeps 1,551 mechanical chain saws and 17 electric power saws ready. Rescue tools such as 136 hydraulic rescue tools, 17 concrete cutters, and 102 bolt cutters stand prepared for immediate use.IG Umashankar Das reviewed preparedness on Thursday under DG Sarangi’s instructions. Officials discussed flood response strategies and coordinated rescue plans. The fire services urge citizens to avoid waterlogged areas and dial 112 immediately in any emergency.
