Close Call for Security Personnel After Bijapur IED Explosion

A powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion rocked Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh on Monday, targeting a pickup van carrying security personnel.

The jawans narrowly escaped harm in the incident.

The blast occurred in a Naxal-affected area of Bijapur, a district in the volatile Bastar region known for frequent Maoist activities.

Visuals from the site show a crater caused by the explosion, with debris scattered around and security personnel assessing the area. No casualties were reported in this incident, but the close call has heightened concerns about the safety of security forces operating in the region.

This incident follows a series of violent attacks in Chhattisgarh. Just a day earlier, on March 23, 2025, two security personnel were injured in another IED blast in the same district, as reported by local authorities.

Earlier this year, on January 6, 2025, a devastating IED attack in Kutru claimed the lives of eight District Reserve Guard (DRG) personnel and a civilian driver.

The Bastar region, particularly the tri-junction of Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Odisha, remains a hotspot for Naxalite activities. Security forces have intensified anti-Naxal operations, with recent successes including the dismantling of a Naxal arms factory on the Sukma-Bijapur border in January 2025. However, the increasing militarization and frequent encounters have also raised concerns about civilian safety and alleged human rights violations, with rights activists pointing to incidents like the January 2025 crossfire in Bijapur that killed a six-month-old girl and injured her mother.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has urged Naxalites to surrender and join the mainstream, emphasizing that continued violence hampers the development of Bastar and jeopardizes the future of the region’s communities. The Central government, aiming to eradicate Naxalism by 2026, has deployed 60 paramilitary battalions in the state, a significant increase from the five in 2000, alongside efforts to establish forward operating bases and improve infrastructure in remote areas.

As security forces continue their operations, the recurring IED attacks highlight the challenges in combating Naxalism in Chhattisgarh’s dense forests, where Maoists exploit the terrain to their advantage. The incident in Bijapur serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict and the urgent need for a balanced approach that ensures both security and development in the region.
