Amid the growing controversy surrounding the portrayal of women in Peddi, actor Kangana Ranaut has said that performers should openly voice their concerns if they feel a character is being objectified on screen.

The remarks come as director Buchi Babu Sana’s sports drama Peddi faces criticism from audiences and social media users over the depiction of Janhvi Kapoor’s character, Achiyyamma. Several viewers have questioned the film’s visual treatment of the female lead and raised concerns about scenes that appear to blur the lines between romance and consent.

Kangana Ranaut Advocates Open Dialogue in Filmmaking

Speaking during the promotions of her upcoming film Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata, Kangana said actors have the responsibility to share their perspectives when something does not feel right.

According to the actor, filmmakers may not always intentionally objectify women, but performers can help identify concerns during the creative process.

Kangana explained that filmmaking is a collaborative effort where actors can raise questions and express discomfort if a particular scene or portrayal appears problematic. She added that many creative teams are willing to listen and make changes when concerns are brought to their attention.

The actor emphasised that open communication often helps filmmakers understand how certain scenes may be perceived differently by audiences.

Peddi Faces Backlash Over Portrayal of Female Lead

The controversy surrounding Peddi intensified after viewers criticised several scenes involving the lead characters played by Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor.

One particular sequence sparked debate online after the male protagonist kisses Achiyyamma during a power outage despite her lack of consent. Critics argued that the scene romanticises behaviour that would otherwise be considered inappropriate.

Several social media users questioned why similar actions are portrayed negatively when committed by villains but are presented differently when performed by a hero.

The criticism also extended to the film’s visual presentation, with viewers accusing the makers of unnecessarily focusing on the female lead’s body rather than her character development.

Director Buchi Babu Sana Issues Apology

Responding to the criticism, director Buchi Babu Sana released a public statement acknowledging the concerns raised by audiences.

The filmmaker said cinema should entertain, inspire and connect with viewers without making anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected. He assured audiences that the feedback was being taken seriously.

The apology came after intense online discussions regarding gender representation and consent in mainstream cinema.

Debate on Women’s Representation in Cinema

The Peddi controversy has reignited discussions about the portrayal of women in Indian films. Critics and audiences have increasingly called for more responsible storytelling that respects female characters and avoids unnecessary objectification.

Kangana’s comments have added to the ongoing debate by highlighting the role actors can play in shaping how women are represented on screen.

Her remarks suggest that performers should not hesitate to participate in creative discussions and advocate for more balanced and respectful character portrayals.

Kangana’s Upcoming Film

Kangana Ranaut will next be seen in Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata, where she plays a dedicated staff nurse whose service and sacrifices often go unnoticed.

The film focuses on the extraordinary courage shown by ordinary individuals during a major crisis and highlights stories of resilience, compassion and public service.

Bharat Bhhagya Viddhaata is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 12.
