A shocking incident unfolded in Keonjhar town when a family refused to accept the body of a youth due to his inter-caste marriage and conversion.
Police and volunteers stepped in to ensure dignified last rites.
The deceased was found in Siripur on Saturday. Investigations revealed that he belonged to Cuttack district and had married outside his caste before leaving home. His relatives declined to receive the body, citing his marriage and religious conversion.
Police attempted reconciliation between both sides but failed. Officials then sought support from the voluntary organisation Bharasa Parivar. Members of the group collected the body and carried it to Keonjhar Adarsh crematorium.
On Sunday, the cremation took place with Hindu rituals. Fandi officer Anam Mahant personally attended and performed the mukhagni. Volunteers emphasised that no one should be denied dignity in death, regardless of social disputes.
