Five people have been arrested and two others detained following an attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee during his visit to Sonarpur in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district.
According to police officials, overnight raids were conducted after reviewing security camera footage and media recordings from the incident. Authorities identified several individuals allegedly involved in the violence and initiated legal action.
What Happened in Sonarpur?
Abhishek Banerjee visited Sonarpur on Saturday to meet families affected by post-poll violence. During the visit, a crowd gathered and tensions escalated. Stones and eggs were reportedly thrown at the TMC leader, while some individuals allegedly attempted to physically assault him.
Security personnel quickly intervened and escorted Banerjee to safety. Despite the attack, he sustained only minor injuries.
Police later registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
Police Action and Investigation
A senior police officer stated that seven individuals were initially detained based on available evidence. After questioning, five people were formally arrested.
Investigators are examining video footage and eyewitness accounts to identify any additional suspects who may have participated in the attack.
Police have described the investigation as ongoing and said further arrests cannot be ruled out.
