Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Odisha’s Suvarnarekha mango and the traditional Bael Pana drink during the 134th episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat.
He spoke about India’s diverse mango varieties and indigenous summer beverages, calling them reflections of cultural unity.
The Prime Minister noted that every region of India has unique mango varieties with distinct flavours and aromas. He specifically mentioned Suvarnarekha, cultivated in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, alongside Hapus, Kesar, Dussehri, Langra, Himsagar, and Banganapalli. “Mangoes are a common topic of discussion. There is hardly a home in India where mangoes are not talked about in the summer,” he said.
Modi lauded the hard work of mango farmers, emphasising their role in strengthening the rural economy and boosting exports. He also highlighted traditional summer drinks, including Aam Panna, lassi, sattu sherbet, kokum sherbet, and Odisha’s Bael Pana, describing them as cherished indigenous beverages prepared in Indian kitchens with local farm produce.
The mention of Odisha’s Suvarnarekha mango and Bael Pana brought joy to farmers and residents. Agricultural experts believe this recognition will boost demand for these specialities in national and international markets.
