The Special Squad of Bhubaneswar Police raided several betel shops and stalls near educational and commercial hubs, uncovering large quantities of ganja packets and ganja‑mixed cigarettes.
The raids were carried out in Patia, Jagamara and adjoining areas under Infocity police limits. Acting on suspicion that betel shops were being used as fronts for drug sales, police teams, accompanied by sniffer dogs, conducted surprise inspections.
Investigators found ganja concealed among regular items like pan, tobacco, chewing gum and water bottles. The seized material is suspected to have been sold to students and youth, raising concerns about its spread in sensitive zones.
Police officers personally searched stalls and shops, recovering hidden packets from cupboards, boxes and corners. Similar raids in Jagamara also yielded significant seizures.
Officials said the operation is part of the capital’s anti‑drug campaign, aimed at making Bhubaneswar “nisha‑mukt.” The scale of recovery suggests a well‑organized network, and samples have been sent for forensic testing.
Authorities confirmed that strict legal action will follow against those involved. Regular raids and surveillance will continue, with police urging citizens to report suspicious activities immediately.
