The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) delivered a commanding performance in the Punjab Civic Polls 2026, securing a majority of municipal wards across the state and strengthening its urban political base.

According to the Punjab State Election Commission, AAP won 957 wards out of a total of 1,977 wards contested across municipal corporations, municipal councils, and nagar panchayats. The Congress emerged as the second-largest party, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slipped to fifth position behind Independents and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

The results are being viewed as a significant political boost for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP ahead of future electoral contests in the state.

Punjab Civic Polls 2026: Party-Wise Results

The Punjab civic elections covered 102 municipal bodies across the state. The latest figures released by election authorities show the following results:

  • AAP: 957 wards
  • Congress (INC): 397 wards
  • Independents (IND): 251 wards
  • Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD): 191 wards
  • BJP: 167 wards
  • Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP): 7 wards

AAP captured nearly half of all wards, highlighting its growing influence in Punjab’s urban local bodies.

AAP Celebrates Resounding Win

Following the announcement of results, AAP workers celebrated across Punjab with rallies, sweets, and traditional dhol performances.

AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal thanked voters for supporting the party and said the results reflected public confidence in AAP’s governance model.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also welcomed the outcome, describing it as a victory for development-focused politics and public welfare initiatives.

BJP Suffers Setback in Urban Punjab

The BJP faced a major setback in the civic elections, finishing fifth overall. The party trailed not only AAP and Congress but also Independents and the Shiromani Akali Dal.

Political observers believe the results indicate continued challenges for the BJP in expanding its urban footprint in Punjab despite efforts to strengthen its organization in the state.

Mohali Emerges as AAP Stronghold

One of the most notable victories came in Mohali Municipal Corporation, where AAP established a clear lead by winning more than 20 seats in the 50-member civic house.

Several AAP candidates recorded comfortable victories, reinforcing the party’s growing support in one of Punjab’s most important urban centres.

The party also performed strongly in Sangrur district, where it secured decisive leads across multiple municipalities, including Sunam, Dhuri, Bhawanigarh, and Longowal.

Pathankot Delivers Surprising Result

Pathankot, traditionally considered a BJP stronghold, witnessed a significant shift in voting patterns.

AAP emerged as the leading party by winning 23 of the 50 wards. Congress secured 12 wards, while BJP managed only eight seats.

The result is being viewed as one of the biggest surprises of the civic elections and signals changing political dynamics in the border district.

Elections Held Across 102 Municipal Bodies

Voting for the Punjab civic polls took place on May 26 across:

  • 8 Municipal Corporations
  • 75 Municipal Councils
  • 19 Nagar Panchayats

A total of 80 wards were elected unopposed before polling day. Final results from several municipal corporations are still being compiled and officially declared.

What the Results Mean

The Punjab Civic Polls 2026 have reinforced AAP’s position as the dominant political force in the state’s urban landscape. The results also highlight Congress’ continued presence as the principal opposition while raising questions about BJP’s electoral strategy in Punjab.

As municipal bodies begin forming local administrations, the outcome is expected to influence political calculations ahead of future state and national elections.

With 957 wards under its control, AAP has emerged as the clear winner of Punjab’s biggest local body election in recent years.
