Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Sweden on Sunday as part of his five-nation diplomatic tour, with India and Sweden preparing for extensive discussions on trade, artificial intelligence, innovation and emerging technologies.

The two-day visit to Gothenburg comes at the invitation of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and marks Modi’s first visit to Sweden since the landmark India-Nordic Summit in 2018.

India-Sweden Partnership To Focus On AI And Green Technology

Officials said the bilateral talks will cover a wide range of sectors, including:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Green transition and clean energy
  • Defence cooperation
  • Space technology
  • Startups and innovation
  • Climate action
  • Resilient supply chains
  • Trade and investment

The visit gains added significance following the conclusion of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement negotiations, which are expected to open new economic opportunities between India and Europe.

Modi And Kristersson To Address European Business Leaders

Prime Minister Modi and Kristersson are also expected to jointly address the European Round Table for Industry, one of Europe’s leading business forums.

The session will reportedly include participation from Ursula von der Leyen and top European industry leaders.

The meeting is expected to focus on strengthening India-Europe economic cooperation amid ongoing global uncertainty and supply chain disruptions.

Trade And Investment Likely To Dominate Discussions

India and Sweden have steadily expanded economic ties over the past few years.

According to officials:

  • Bilateral trade touched nearly $7.75 billion in 2025
  • Swedish foreign direct investment in India reached $2.825 billion
  • Nearly 7% of EU companies operating in India are Swedish firms

Sweden is also considered one of Europe’s strongest innovation hubs, particularly in startups, clean technology and research-driven industries.

Global Energy Concerns Expected To Feature In Talks

The ongoing tensions in West Asia and the resulting global energy concerns are also likely to feature prominently during the discussions.

India has been actively engaging with European partners to build future-ready supply chains and strengthen energy resilience amid fluctuating global fuel prices and geopolitical instability.

During earlier stops on his tour, PM Modi warned that continued global conflicts and energy crises could threaten decades of economic progress and push vulnerable populations towards poverty.
