A major rescue operation unfolded at Soro Railway Station after Railway Police rescued 27 people, including 19 minors, amid suspicion of an alleged religious conversion-linked trafficking attempt.

The incident took place on Saturday evening in Odisha’s Balasore district when police personnel noticed a large group travelling with only two young men.

Police Grew Suspicious During Questioning

According to police sources, the group had reportedly travelled from the Kaptipada region in Mayurbhanj and was allegedly being taken to Angul.

Officials said the two youths initially claimed the children and accompanying adults were being taken for educational activities and a summer course. However, inconsistencies in their statements during questioning reportedly raised suspicion among Railway Police officials.

The police then launched a detailed inquiry and stopped the group before boarding.

27 People Rescued, Including 19 Children

Authorities confirmed that the rescued group included:

  • 19 minors
  • 8 adults

After the rescue operation, the children and other individuals were handed over to Childline officials for counselling, safety measures and identity verification.

Two Youths Detained For Investigation

Railway Police detained the two youths accompanying the group for further questioning.

Officials are now investigating:

  • The exact purpose behind transporting the group
  • Whether any organised network was involved
  • Possible links to illegal trafficking or forced religious conversion activities

Police have not yet confirmed any formal charges, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Authorities Intensify Vigilance At Railway Stations

The incident has once again highlighted growing concerns around child safety, trafficking and illegal transportation of minors through railway networks in eastern India.

Security agencies are expected to intensify surveillance and verification procedures at major railway stations across Odisha following the rescue operation.
