Donald Trump and Xi Jinping held high-level talks in Beijing on Thursday in what is being seen as one of the most crucial diplomatic meetings of 2026, with discussions focusing on Taiwan, trade, the Iran conflict and global energy security.
The two leaders met for nearly two hours during the opening round of the US-China summit, with both sides attempting to stabilise relations amid rising geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty.
Xi Jinping struck a cautious but firm tone on Taiwan, warning that mishandling the issue could push both nations toward confrontation. The Chinese president stressed that the Taiwan question remains one of the most sensitive issues in bilateral ties.
“If handled properly, China-US relations will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries could face clashes and even conflicts,” Xi said during the talks in Beijing.
Despite the warning, Xi also described the meeting as an opportunity to build a “constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability” that could guide ties between the two global powers for years ahead.
Trade and economic cooperation featured prominently during the summit. Xi said both countries had reached “generally balanced and positive outcomes” in trade discussions and added that China would continue opening its economy wider to American businesses.
The Chinese president welcomed deeper cooperation and urged both sides to strengthen communication channels across diplomatic, political and military fields.
Apple CEO Tim Cook, Elon Musk and Jensen Huang were among several American business leaders present in Beijing during the summit discussions.
Donald Trump also adopted a notably positive tone while addressing the relationship between the two nations. Calling US-China ties one of the most consequential relationships in world history, Trump said the discussions with Xi had been “extremely positive and productive.”
The US president highlighted the long historical connection between the two countries and praised cooperation between American and Chinese people across generations.
Trump and Xi additionally discussed increasing agricultural trade and improving oil flows as global energy markets remain under pressure due to ongoing tensions in West Asia.
According to reports, both leaders also exchanged views on maintaining stability in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route that has faced threats amid the Iran conflict. Xi reportedly reiterated China’s opposition to the militarisation of the waterway.
The summit comes at a time when global attention remains fixed on the ongoing Iran war, disrupted supply chains and rising energy prices. Analysts believe the outcome of the Beijing talks could significantly influence global markets, diplomacy and regional security in the coming months.
Trump is expected to hold another round of meetings with Xi Jinping on Friday before departing China. While no major breakthrough announcements have been made yet, the summit has already produced strong messaging on Taiwan, trade cooperation and geopolitical stability.
