Teen batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has taken another major step toward representing India at the senior level after the BCCI named him in the India A squad for the upcoming one-day tri-series in Sri Lanka.

The talented youngster will travel with the India A side for the tournament, which will feature Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A from June 9 to June 21. This marks Sooryavanshi’s maiden one-day call-up after previously representing India A in the T20-format Rising Stars Asia Cup last year.

The selection comes as a reward for the batter’s sensational performances in IPL 2026, where he emerged as one of the breakout stars of the season while playing for Rajasthan Royals.

Sooryavanshi has been named in a strong India A squad led by Tilak Varma, while Riyan Parag will serve as vice-captain. Other exciting young names in the squad include Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh and Suryansh Shedge.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Dream Rise Continues

The young batter has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last year. Ever since his stunning IPL debut and record-breaking century, Sooryavanshi has rapidly become one of the most talked-about names in Indian cricket.

He also impressed heavily for India Under-19 across international tournaments in England, Australia and South Africa. His remarkable journey peaked with a blistering 175-run knock in the Under-19 World Cup final, helping India secure their sixth title.

In the ongoing IPL 2026 season, Sooryavanshi has continued his incredible form, scoring 440 runs in just 11 matches, including one century and two half-centuries.

His fearless batting style and consistency have sparked growing calls for a senior India debut from several former cricketers and experts.

Former Cricketers Back Sooryavanshi for India Debut

Several cricket legends, including AB de Villiers, Michael Vaughan, Michael Clarke, Kris Srikkanth and Shikhar Dhawan, have praised the youngster’s talent and potential.

While many have backed him for an early India debut, some experts have advised caution. Former West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite recently urged selectors to allow the teenager more time to develop before pushing him into international cricket.

AB de Villiers also recently warned that the road ahead would not always be smooth and stressed the importance of patience and long-term development.

India Debut Loading?

Reports earlier suggested that Sooryavanshi was among the players being considered for India’s T20I tour of Ireland later this year. However, with only two matches scheduled on that tour, the India A assignment in Sri Lanka could prove more valuable for his development.

India A are also expected to play a five-match T20 series against England in July, keeping Sooryavanshi firmly in contention for future national team opportunities.

With consistent performances across IPL, Under-19 cricket and India A now building rapidly, many believe it may only be a matter of time before Vaibhav Sooryavanshi receives his first senior India cap.
