After years of patient waiting, the people of Bhawanipatna have a reason to cheer. The Odisha government has finally given the green signal to transform the vital Bhawanipatna–Khariar road into a modern four-lane highway, turning a long-standing public demand into a concrete reality.
Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Prithviraj Harichandan announced the ambitious project today, describing it as a landmark step for the region’s progress. “We have listened to the aspirations of Bhawanipatna residents,” the Minister said. “This four-lane corridor will not only ease daily commutes but will become a powerful engine of economic growth for farmers, traders, and the entire western Odisha.”
The 70-kilometre stretch, which currently operates as a two-lane road, will be widened into a four-lane facility. As part of the ₹640-crore project, five major bridges and 15 minor bridges will be freshly constructed. The old bridge over the Tel River — a vital link that has seen better days — will also be fully restored and strengthened.
Residents and commuters are expected to reap immediate benefits. Travel time between Bhawanipatna and Khariar will shrink dramatically, saving fuel and precious hours. Farmers will be able to transport paddy, vegetables, and forest produce to markets faster and with less damage. Small businesses, ambulance services, passenger buses, and private vehicles will move more smoothly, while the wider road is also expected to reduce accident rates significantly.
The improved connectivity will link the districts of Kalahandi and Nuapada more efficiently, opening doors for new opportunities. Shops, petrol pumps, hotels, warehouses, and small industries are likely to spring up along the corridor, generating both direct and indirect employment for local people. Students, patients, and government staff will find journeys to schools, colleges, hospitals, and offices far more convenient.
In times of natural calamities such as floods and cyclones, the upgraded road will ensure faster access to interior villages, strengthening disaster response and relief efforts. The project is also being viewed as a major boost for tourism in the region.
With the foundation stone likely to be laid soon, this ₹640-crore (road) + ₹91-crore (bridges) initiative is being hailed as a game-changer that will accelerate the long-term development of western Odisha. For thousands of Bhawanipatna families who have waited patiently for better roads, the four-lane dream is finally turning into reality — one that promises faster journeys, stronger livelihoods, and brighter prospects for the future.
