A Youth Congress leader was found dead with a gunshot wound at his residence in the Bhagabati Nagar area of Sonepur district late Tuesday night, officials said.
The deceased has been identified as Rajesh Mishra, a member of the District Congress Committee and an active Youth Congress functionary. Preliminary information indicates that he sustained the gunshot injury from his licensed revolver at around 1:00 am. The exact circumstances leading to the incident are yet to be established.
Family members and neighbours alerted the police after hearing a gunshot from the house. A police team reached the spot, recovered the licensed firearm, and sent the body for post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
Police officials stated that an investigation is underway and all possible angles are being examined. Statements from family members, relatives, and close associates are being recorded as part of the inquiry.
The incident has led to concern across Subarnapur district, with several Congress leaders and party supporters expressing grief and condolences to the family.
